Welcome to this e-learning programme designed as an introduction to health and social care professionals interested to learn more about the science and practice of quality improvement (QI).

The programme is designed as an introduction for medical, nursing, allied health and social care professionals together with healthcare managers working in a variety of settings. Many of the examples are from primary and prehospital care because of the background and experience of the authors.

Quality and safety are key drivers of current health policy, partly because of recent highly publicised failures in the health and social care system, but more particularly because of the desire among health and social care professionals, supported by health regulators and the public, to continually improve our systems of care. We need safe, effective (and efficient) care which offers a positive experience for people accessing services.

By increasing critical understanding and practical skills in applying the knowledge and skills of quality improvement, implementation and safety science to work in primary, community, secondary or tertiary health and social care settings, this e-learning module will increase opportunities to benefit service users.
